1. --- Known Issues / Troubleshooting ---
* Regardless of your video card, make sure to download and install the latest drivers from your card's manufacturer.
* Using ALT+TAB may result in game instability with some hardware configurations and is not advised.
* Avoid using shaders unless your PC is using one of the recommended video cards (see below) or higher. When launching Instinct, you can turn shaders off from the Main Menu by selecting "Settings", then "Video", then "Advanced". The Advanced Video options control panel will appear. Make sure the option box next to "Shaders" is blank.
* Some of the levels' Autosave files can become corrupted on a small percentage of PC's. The levels that may be affected are: Well 2, Habitable Module, and Northern Entrance 2. If affected, attempting to load the autosave files for those levels may result in a crash. A window will pop up, and you should select the "break" command with the keyboard, pressing the ENTER key afterwards. You should be returned to windows after the program shuts down. Please restart the computer at that time, and do not attempt to load autosave files again for the aforementioned levels.

3. --- Performance Tuning ---
Please try the following steps if you are experiencing slowdown or freezing in Instinct.
- Turn the resolution down to 800 X 600. This can be done from the Main Menu by selecting Setting --> Video --> Resolution.
- Open the Advanced Video Options Window from the Main Menu by selecting Settings --> Video --> Advanced. From here, try lowering the Texture Resolution setting, turning off Dynamic Shadows, lowering the Shadow Quality, lowering the Decal Lifespan, turning off Shaders, turning off HDR, and turning off DoF.

4. --- Gameplay Instructions ---
- MAIN MENU -
The Main Menu appears a short time after the game starts running. While playing Instinct, you can hit the Escape button to see the menu.
From the Main Menu, you can quickly start up where you last left off by clicking Load Game. You also have the option of starting a New Game. Selecting Load Game will take you to the Saved Games screen. All of your saved games, including Quicksaves and Autosaves will show up on the left. Double-click the one you want to load it, or click it once to highlight it, and then click the Load button on the bottom right. If you choose the New Game button from the Main Menu, you will instead be prompted to select a difficulty level. Select Easy if you are relatively new to First-Person Shooting games. Select Normal if you have played through First-Person Shooters before, and are generally familiar with them. Select Hard if you are quite skilled at First-Person Shooters, and are looking for a serious challenge!
Choosing Options from the Main Menu allows you to alter music and sound effects levels, screen resolution, keyboard commands, mouse sensitivity and advanced video settings. Click Apply when you are finished. You may need to exit back to Windows and re-launch Instinct for the changes in the settings to take effect.
- KEYBOARD AND MOUSE -
Use your keyboard and mouse to play. By default, the W,S,A,and D keys will be used to move your character around. W moves forward, S moves backwards, A sidesteps to the left, and D sidesteps to the right. The mouse movement is used to determine what the character is looking and aiming at, as well as what direction he/she is facing. If you are unfamiliar with the First-Person Shooter genre of games, take some time to get used to moving your character and aiming your weapon. You will have to crouch down (hold 'C' key) right at the beginning of the game to enter the tube.
Using the Left-click on the mouse will fire any gun you have equipped, or it will swing your melee weapon if readied. The Right-click will utilize any special function the weapon may have. This will strike the opponent with the butt of the shotgun, or zoom in with the scope rifle. The scroll wheel on the mouse can be used to change weapons. You can also change weapons by pressing the numbers 1 through 7 on the keyboard. If no weapon comes up when you hit one, then you are not currently carrying any weapons of that category, or you are already using the only weapon that you have in that category.
To take down your enemies, position the cross-hair in the center of the screen over your target and press the left mouse button to fire or swing your weapon. By default, you can reload your weapon by hitting the 'R' key, jump by hitting the Space bar, and crouch down by holding the 'C' key. To view a record of your comrades' radio chatter, hit the 'J' key, using Page up and Page down to change pages. Hit 'J' again to close that journal window. Valuable information can be found in the journal, so be sure to check it when you hear the characters radio each other. Hit the 'P' key to pause the game, hitting it again to resume.
- THE "HEADS-UP DISPLAY" and "HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR CHARACTER" -
While playing Instinct, your character's health, armor and ammo are all displayed on the top section of the screen. Keeping both your health and armor as close to 100 as possible is ideal for success in the game. The ammo section has two numbers: the left number represents the ammo left in your clip, the right number shows the total amount that you have available for reloading. The maximum that each can be depends on the weapon. It is ideal to keep your clip full by reloading often, but try to wait until you are relatively safe before reloading. You can take care of your health and armor by finding first aid kits (small white rectangular boxes with a red "plus" sign) and Kevlar armor vests. Keeping your armor in good shape will greatly reduce the damage that you take from enemies.
- ENVIRONMENT -
Certain objects like switches, buttons and some doors can be manipulated by hitting the 'E' key. This key is also used to pick up first aid kits, Kevlar armor vests, weapons, and ammo clip/boxes when they're in reach. Such items can also be picked up simply by walking over them or bumping into them. If you can't pick an item up, you already have the most that you can carry.
